- NSC holds strategic training for mid-level officials
The Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill 2023, which seeks to repeal the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) Act Cap N133 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, is currently awaiting passage by the Senate after successful passage by the House of Representatives.
NSC’s Executive Secretary, Barr. Pius Akutah MON, revealed this during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Operational Retreat for Middle Level Management officers of the Council in Lagos on Friday.
His words: “Just last week, the House of Representatives passed our bill, the Nigerian Shipping and Port Economic Regulatory Agency Bill. That’s a big step in the right direction.”

“On Tuesday, the Senate was poised to pass the bill so that it begins to prepare for Presidential assent. We were there at the National Assembly up until 11pm, but because of the supplementary budget, that line on the other paper of the Senate was not taken. The Senate has done the first reading of the Bill, and what’s left is for them to pass the bill before the National Assembly went on recess.”
The NSC boss expressed optimism that after the recess the new bill will be sent to President Bola Tinubu to be signed into law.
Akutah expressed gratitude to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, for his support and the House of Representatives for the speedy passage of the bill.
Meanwhile, the NSC boss noted that the Council has witnessed the retirement of several eggheads in recent times and he charged the middle-level officials to maximize the training in a bid to fill the shoes of the retired officials.
“Nigerian Shippers Council is a key factor in moving the economy of this country forward. The role that we are playing as economic regulators is huge and once we have the law in place, it gives us the capacity to not only bark but bite.”
“I believe that the sector will be better for it. And we are counting on all of you here, as the engine room of this agency. Your role is crucial to move the agency forward, ” he said.
Also speaking, the Director, Human Resources, NSC, Mrs. Ada Okam, noted that the NSC boss arrived Lagos from Abuja specifically to grace the opening ceremony of the retreat.
Okam posited that the retreat will cascade reflections and decisions of the 2024 management retreat to the middle-level management officials.
“This will enable mid-level officers to recognize their key roles in line with the Council’s mandate and the performance bond signed by the NSC Chief Executive and the Minister for Marine and Blue Economy,” she said.
