The Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has unveiled ambitious plans to establish a unified standard transport system in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Dr Abdulateef Bello, Director of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), shared this groundbreaking initiative during a stakeholders’ engagement meeting in Abuja.
Expressing the critical need for a standardized transport system in the rapidly evolving city, Bello emphasized the administration’s commitment to leaving no aspect of Abuja’s development unattended. The focus is on creating an organized transportation framework that effectively caters to the diverse needs of all citizens.
In collaboration with consultants, the administration has meticulously devised plans to introduce buses powered by Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a sustainable solution to mass transit challenges in Abuja.
These modern buses, slated for deployment on various routes, aim to replace outdated and problematic vehicles and taxis that currently disrupt the smooth flow of traffic on Abuja roads.
While Dr Abubakar Sadiq, Chairman of RTEIN Mass Transit, welcomed the administration’s forward-thinking policy, he underscored the importance of fair consideration for critical players in the transport sector.
Okorie Victor, Chairman of the Self Employed Commercial Drivers’ Association (SECDAN), stressed the need for aggressive sensitization campaigns to ensure that all stakeholders have a comprehensive understanding of the administration’s evolving transport policies.
