President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Deputy Comptroller General of Customs (DCG), Adeniyi Bashir Adewale MFR, as the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).
This is according to a statement signed by the Director, Information for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Prior to his appointment, Adeniyi who hails from Modakeke in Osun state served as Acting DCG from January to date and he was also previously Customs spokesman for almost two decades until January 2017.
Adeniyi gained national momentum after he supervised the seizure of $8.07 million cash being illegally taken out of Nigeria through the E-Wing of the international airport tarmac. He was subsequently posted to head the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja as Commandant.
Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR dsm fnipr psc(+) has over 30 years experience in Customs Administration covering strategic and operational responsibilities. Hw equally possesses deep understanding of the complex and con- stantly evolving international trade landscape. He has strong command of customs regulations, laws, and procedures as well as the ability to navigate and adapt to changing policies and regulations.
As a result of his rich PR background, over the years Adeniyi developed and displayed excellent communication and leadership skills responsible for leading teams of customs officials, working closely with stakeholders across a variety of industries.
Having obtained his Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in International Relations from the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife in 1987; Adeniyi later bagged his Master’s degree in Communication Science from the Universitaire Svizzera D’Italiana (USI) – Lugano-Switzerland.
Adeniyi also built strong relationships with stakeholders and collaborated effectively to ensure efficient movement of goods across borders, over the course of his career. He has a keen eye for details and ability to identify potential risks and areas of non-compliance. This is evident in effective risk management strategies, guidance and support developed and implemented for his teams to ensure that all customs procedures are followed accurately and efficiently.
The new Customs boss is known to maintain the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. He is also committed to continuously improving his knowledge and skills to stay ahead of the ever-changing customs landscape.
Adeniyi is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) and a recipient of World Customs Organization Award of Excellence as Project Team Leader, Securité Par Collaboration (SPC++), a Customs Regional Security Project, January 2018.
He is also a joint winner of Burson-Marsteller Award for the Best Research Project on “Reputation Management in Nigeria Customs Service” in partial fulfillment of the award of Masters of Science in Communications, USI, Lugano Switzerland, November 2013 and he was Best Customs Public Relations Officer 2004-2007.
Meanwhile, the President also approved the immediate dissolution of the Governing Boards of all Federal Government Parastatals, Agencies, Institutions, and Government-Owned Companies in the exercise of its Constitutional Powers and in the Public interest.
The Director of Information, Willie Bassey, for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, said the dissolution does not affect Boards, Commissions and Councils listed in the Third Schedule, Part 1, Section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.
He said In view of the development and until such a time new boards are constituted, the Chief Executive Officers of the Parastatals, Agencies, Institutions, and Government-Owned Companies are directed to refer matters requiring the attention of their Boards to the President, through the Permanent Secretaries of their respective supervisory Ministries and Offices.
Permanent Secretaries are directed, also, to route such correspondences to Mr President through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Consequently, all Ministries, Departments and Agencies are to ensure compliance to the provision of this directive which took effect from Friday 16th June, 2023.
Permanent Secretaries are particularly directed to inform the Chief Executive Officers of the affected Agencies under the supervision of their respective Ministries/Offices for immediate.
