In a recent revelation, Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, disclosed on Tuesday that his office has not received any allocation for the past six months.
Speaking at the commissioning of the secretariat of the Correspondents Chapel of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Benin City, Shaibu stated that he has been sustaining the operations of his office through personal sacrifices and goodwill.
Notable personalities, including Anslem Ojezua, Oserhiemen Osunbor, and Matthew Urhoghide, who are also aspirants in the upcoming 2024 Edo governorship race, were present at the event.
Shaibu, who is an aspirant for the Edo State 2024 governorship election, conveyed his enduring connection with the media, acknowledging the pivotal role it played in safeguarding his life during the military era before the return to democracy in 1999.
He emphasized, “I am your ambassador anywhere I am. This is not because of politics, but because of what you have done to save my life in the course of doing your work. I would have done more, but you know there is tension between the governor, (Godwin Obaseki), and I, and for six months, no allocation to my office.
“So whatever I am doing is contributions from friends and my goodwill, and I am still standing very strong. I will continue to be strong because, for me, Edo should be one, Edo at every time should be paramount in our minds.”
Shaibu recounted how a journalist’s investigation and subsequent report saved his life during the military era, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to putting the state first. Despite the challenges, he pledged to strengthen the institution responsible for his ascent to power.
