The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Osun State, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, has commended voters, electoral officials and security personnel for the peaceful conduct of the ongoing governorship election, urging stakeholders to maintain calm throughout the exercise.
Oyebamiji spoke shortly after casting his ballot at Ward 9 in Irewole Local Government Area at about 10:42am, saying the voting process at his polling unit was orderly and peaceful.
“I have just voted and I can see that people came out here. Every process is going peacefully. The INEC officials are here, the voters are here, the police are here and the security operatives are here,” he said.
The APC candidate said reports from other polling units also indicated that the election was generally peaceful, although security personnel had responded to isolated attempts to disrupt the process.
“From the information we have received so far, everything is going on well. The election is going peacefully. INEC is doing its job, and at the same time, the security people are attending to one or two places where some people want to cause trouble. The police are in charge,” he said.
Oyebamiji urged voters and other stakeholders to shun violence and conduct themselves peacefully, particularly as voting progresses and results begin to emerge.
“I want to appeal to the people that it is important that they conduct themselves and vote peacefully. The security people have to be in charge,” he said.
He also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials for their conduct, expressing optimism that the peaceful atmosphere would be sustained across the state.
Asked about reports that a lawmaker had allegedly been arrested with machine guns, Oyebamiji declined to comment, saying the matter was within the purview of the security agencies.
“I don’t have any reaction to that. I think the security operatives will do their job,” he said.
On his expectation from the election, the APC candidate expressed confidence in his chances of victory.
“My expectation is that I’m going to party today,” Oyebamiji said.
