Onitsha Prepares For Ofala Festival 2025

The ancient kingdom of Onitsha is set for another spectacular edition of the Ofala Festival, with traditional ceremonies already underway ahead of the grand celebrations scheduled for October 17 and 18.
This year’s festival, themed “Njiko na Ntachi” meaning Unity and Perseverance, celebrates the strength, resilience, and communal harmony that have defined the Onitsha people for generations.
In the buildup to the main event, the city has come alive with age-old ceremonies that reflect its deep cultural roots. Among them is Owuwaji (Yam Festival), marking a season of thanksgiving and abundance.
The Inye Ukwu Na Nlo Eze Onicha, the monarch’s annual spiritual retreat, follows, symbolizing reflection, divine consultation, and guidance for the kingdom’s prosperity.
Also ongoing is the Ogbalido (Feast of Atonement), a solemn rite that purifies the land and prepares the people for the monarch’s public appearance during the Ofala.
The highlight of the celebration begins with Iru Ofala on October 17, when the Obi of Onitsha, adorned in majestic regalia, will emerge to receive homage from his chiefs and subjects in a display of royal grandeur. The following day, Azu Ofala (October 18), will be dedicated to the people; featuring age grades, cultural troupes, and dancers in colourful parades that showcase the artistry and vitality of Onitsha’s heritage.
Speaking on the festival’s theme, Nn’emeka Maduegbuna, Chairman of the Ofala Strategic Marketing and Communications Subcommittee, said the celebration is a symbol of Onitsha’s enduring spirit.
“Njiko na Ntachi emphasizes the importance of unity and perseverance in our community. The Ofala Festival is not just a cultural event — it is a celebration of our history, our traditions, and our people. We invite everyone to join us and experience the vibrant culture of Onitsha.”
The Ofala Festival remains one of Nigeria’s most iconic royal celebrations, blending spiritual reflection with cultural spectacle. As the kingdom prepares to host visitors from across the country and beyond, the festival continues to stand as a beacon of identity, pride, and renewal.
With drums set to roll and the city adorned for the season, Ofala 2025 promises to be a magnificent display of unity, perseverance, and the timeless beauty of Onitsha’s heritage.
