Post-Graduate Student Terminates Admission Over Deborah’s Killing
A postgraduate student of the Department of Political Science at the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Mr. Oyeniyi Iwakun has withdrawn his admission over the recent killing of Deborah Samuel in Sokoto State.
Oyeniyi, with the admission number: P21SSPS8018, revealed his decision to terminate his studentship at ABU in an open letter addressed to the Vice Chancellor of the university.
Noting that the move is to protest the gruesome murder of Miss Deborah Samuel, a 200 level student of Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, who was killed on Thursday, May 12, 2022, Oyeniyi lamented that there was no justification for Deborah’s Killing
He, however, observed that the ambience of religious extremism and volatility witnessed in Sokoto is similar to the environment in Kaduna and advised the government to address the menace.
Oyeniyi’s words: “I opine that no matter her offence, nothing justifies the action of her murderers. More worrisome as shown in the online video in circulation on the social media is the supervised and organized manner of her killing and cremation in a broad daylight.”
“As a detribalised young man with liberal views on religion, I see this ugly incident as most unacceptable in recent time therefore births my skepticism about my safety in Zaria, Kaduna state which has similar features of religious cum tribal intolerance, orchestrated insecurity and uncurtailed activities of bandits and terrorists. It may be her today, but who knows who is next tomorrow?”
Describing his open letter as a contribution to the demand for justice for the late Deborah, he posited that the perpetrators of the heinous act must be brought to book.
