The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has honoured two of its veteran marine professionals, Prince Gbadamosi Hakeem and Captain Shakirudeen Lamidi, as they retire after 35 years of meritorious service in the Lagos State Civil Service.
LASWA, in a statement by its Corporate Communications Department, described the two retirees as distinguished professionals whose decades of service contributed significantly to the development, safety and operational efficiency of water transportation in Lagos State.
Hakeem, who served as a Marine Operations Supervisor, was particularly recognised for his role in managing LASWA’s fleet operations and ensuring the operational readiness of its boats.
Affectionately known as “Number 1” by members of his team, Hakeem supervised daily fleet activities as well as LASWA captains and deckhands operating across the state’s waterways.
The Authority said his professionalism, commitment to safety and dedication to mentoring younger marine personnel helped strengthen operational standards and develop a new generation of boat captains and maritime professionals.
Hakeem began his public service career with the defunct Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA, bringing decades of practical experience and institutional knowledge to the Authority.
Lamidi, a seasoned mariner and senior boat captain, was also celebrated for his contribution to safe navigation and the evolution of water transportation in Lagos.
Like Hakeem, Lamidi started his career with the Lagos State Ferry Corporation before joining LASWA in 2008.
During his years of service, he distinguished himself through navigational expertise, professionalism and an unwavering commitment to waterways safety.
LASWA said Lamidi’s calm leadership and extensive knowledge of Lagos waterways earned him the respect of colleagues, passengers and industry stakeholders.
Beyond his operational responsibilities, he played a key role in mentoring younger captains and transferring valuable maritime knowledge and experience to the next generation.
The Authority said the retirement of the two veterans marked the end of significant chapters in their professional journeys but also provided an opportunity to celebrate the lasting impact of their service.
“Their dedication, discipline, and years of selfless service have helped shape the Authority into what it is today,” LASWA said.
- The Authority thanked Hakeem and Lamidi for their outstanding contributions to the Lagos waterways sector and wished them good health, happiness and fulfilment as they begin a new phase of life.
