While the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola CON, was concluding the official celebration and intellectual discourse with the Acting Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria and industry stakeholders, some 744 kilometres away, at the beautiful MAN Oron campus there was a more exquisite celebration as the Academy beamed with blue lights.

News from the impressive performance of MAN Oron students at the essay competitions had also gotten to the heart of the campus, adding more flame to the already planned celebration.

At the Rt. Hon. Auditorium in MAN Oron, a 1000 capacity hall fitted with modern audio visual equipment of international standard, cadets and the Academy staff watched the blue light performance at the Light House in commemoration of the WMD 2025.

During the celebration at Eko Hotel in Lagos, MAN Oron cadets shined brightly as award recipients; Uzoma Favour received a cash prize of N350,000, a laptop and a certificate; while Adegbuyi Emmanuel Adebayo and Utibe-Obong Uwem won N100,000 each and also received certificates.

Speaking after the event, Uzoma, a final-year cadet of Maritime Transport and Business Management at the Academy, and most senior cadet among the award recipients, expressed gratitude and satisfaction on behalf of his colleagues.

His words: “This is not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of the quality training and guidance I have received from the Academy. I believe my win came from aligning my essay with the 2025 WMD theme, “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity.”

“I examined Nigeria’s pressing maritime challenges such as; piracy, marine pollution, port congestion, and illegal fishing, and provided practical solutions that support NIMASA’s vision for safe, secure, and sustainable shipping.”

He assured that the recognition inspires him to keep developing himself, adding that he remains open to more opportunities in the maritime sector, even after graduation.

“As I prepare to complete my program, I am committed to contributing to Nigeria’s blue economy through innovation, efficient port management, and sustainable maritime practices,” he remarked.

He appreciated the management of the MAN Oron, for their tireless efforts, guidance, and unwavering commitment to excellence in maritime education.

“The training, discipline, and mentorship we have received at the Academy have shaped us into the cadets we are today, preparing us to face both academic and professional challenges with confidence.

The Academy’s delegation at the event include; the Chairman of MAN Governing Council, Engr Kehinde Olayinka Akinola; the Acting Registrar, Mr. Peter Netson; Director, Research and Strategic Development, Dr. John Adeyanju.; Director of Human Resources, Mr. Yusuf Ishola.

Others were; Head of Quality Control, Dr. Lawal Akeem; Head of Legal, Barr. Enobong Ekpo; PA to the Rector, Hope Inyang; and the Head of Public Affairs, Domo Umoekpe; as well as some instructors and Master Mariners.
