In a bid to enhance the degree of safety on inland waterways, Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has activated a Safety Awareness Campaign team which commenced a sensitization tour across several key waterways communities, including Falomo Terminal, Badore Ferry Terminal, Ito-Omu, Sangotedo, Baiyeku and Ijede Jetty.
This initiative is part of LASWA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all waterway users in Lagos State.
During the outreach, the team engaged directly with ferry passengers, boat operators, schoolchildren, and community members, educating them on vital safety protocols such as the proper use of life jackets, emergency response procedures, boarding and disembarking etiquette, as well as the importance of obeying maritime regulations.
To reinforce these safety messages, the team distributed a range of materials including branded life jackets, reflective safety souvenirs, informational leaflets, and educational flyers in both English and local languages.
According to the waterways regulator, the distribution of these items not only encouraged compliance but also fostered a stronger culture of safety consciousness among regular waterway commuters.
The exercise also served as an opportunity for LASWA to gather feedback from users and identify specific safety concerns within each locality, reinforcing its commitment to continuous improvement and safer waterways for all.
