In a bid to promote maternal and child healthcare and contribute to the reduction of maternal mortality, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Dr. Gift Jegede, will host a Mama & Child Market Outreach at Idi-Araba Market in Surulere, Lagos, under Personal Community Development Service (CDS) Project Team.

The medical outreach, scheduled to hold on Friday, May 22, 2026, is being organised in collaboration with her Non-governmental organization – The Confident Woman Initiative and aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3.1 aimed at reducing maternal mortality.

According to the convener, the outreach, which will be driven by NYSC volunteers serving in Surulere, is designed to bring essential healthcare information and basic medical services closer to women, especially expectant mothers and nursing mothers within the market community.

Activities lined up for the programme include; antenatal health talks, free medical screening, maternal health awareness sessions, blood pressure checks, and body mass index (BMI) assessments.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Team Lead, Dr Gift Jegede, described the outreach as a people-centred intervention aimed at ensuring that women, particularly pregnant mothers, receive timely health information and basic screenings that could help prevent avoidable complications.

“Pregnancy should not be a journey of fear and ignorance. Sometimes, a simple conversation, blood pressure check or timely health advice can make all the difference between anxiety and assurance for a mother and child,” Dr. Jegede said.

As a Corp Member serving in Surulere, Dr. Jegede remarked that the outreach underscores her commitment to community impact through preventive healthcare and awareness, while encouraging market women and residents around the Idi-Araba axis to take advantage of the free services.

The event will take place at Idi-Araba Market, Surulere, Lagos, with organisers urging interested participants to arrive early to maximise the available healthcare opportunities. For enquiries, members of the public can contact +2349035417625.
