Maritime Security Providers Association of Nigeria (MASPAN) has warned its members desist from publishing or sharing unverified security reports capable of ridiculing the image of Nigerian Navy.
The President of MASPAN, Mr. Emmanuel Maiguwa, made this call in press statement disseminated at the weekend titled: “Statement of Caution on Public Statements Capable of Compromising the Image of the Nigerian Navy”.
“I would like to caution our members to desist from promoting unfounded allegations capable of compromising the image of the Nigerian Navy especially on social media platforms.”
“While we respect individual and organisation’s right to air and promote views on media, the method we chose may compromise our goal of supporting the NN as partners in dealing with crimes within our waters,” the statement read.
The MASPAN President, however, observed that there are professional media organizations with trained journalists to investigate and report information to the general public.
While stressing that news investigation isn’t the core area of strength for MASPAN members, he added that. It does not prevent the individual members from passing vital information to the media.
“If we must promote any publications we should be careful to ensure they are information gotten from credible media houses. Lastly, it will be ideal for members should desist from promoting publications against the Nigerian Navy or its leadership on social media and call their employees to order, so we allow the professional media discharge this role. While we focus on providing support to the NN.”
“The association will not hesitate to sanction organisations who’s staff consistently engages in these act without reprimand. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding,” it said.
