The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), yesterday, confirmed the death of 16 passengers involved in an auto crash on Tuesday morning along Epe road, Lagos.
The Lagos State Sector Commander, Segun Ogungbemide, said the agency rescued two people alive, while five were injured in a head-on collision, involving a truck and a commercial bus.
Segun stated that the accident was caused by careless driving as the truck ran into the commercial bus.
He added that a total number of 23 passengers were involved in the crash, while remains of the victims have been handed over to the Hausa community for burial. He said: “16 died, five were injured and two were rescued alive. All the debris had been removed from the road. Those that were injured are already taken to the hospital.
“I won’t be able to give details if the driver of the truck was also involved in the crash because we were busy with the rescue operation. But I will confirm.”
However, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement, by its Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, stated that based on preliminary report regarding the crash inward Epe, five persons were burnt beyond recognition.
It said: “ Upon arrival of the Response Team, LRT Whale’s Squad at the scene, it was revealed that a truck conveying sand had a head on collision with a hummer commuter bus with six passengers on board.
“The two vehicles got burnt as a result of the impact of the collision, unfortunately, five adult males were burnt beyond recognition. The commodities were bagged and handed over to their relatives.”
