In a bold step to promote water safety among schoolchildren, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has kicked off the fifth edition of its Lagos Water Savvy Kids Program, training 50 pupils from five public schools in Badagry on swimming, water safety, and emergency survival skills.
The week-long initiative, which commenced on Monday, October 20, 2025, is being implemented in partnership with the Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) and the Dolphin Swim School (DSS) — a leading institution dedicated to empowering women and children through aquatic education.
Designed to combine theory with practical sessions, the program aims to equip pupils with essential knowledge on safe water practices, boost their swimming confidence, and reduce the fear of water; especially among young Lagosians who regularly commute via the state’s inland waterways.
According to LASWA, the participating schools were carefully selected from riverine communities in Badagry where water transport is a part of daily life. The agency emphasized that as Lagos expands its waterways transportation system, it is crucial that young commuters are confident and safety-conscious.
The Water Savvy Kids Program, now in its fifth edition, forms part of LASWA’s broader advocacy efforts to build a generation of responsible, self-reliant, and safety-aware waterway users.
The training runs until Friday, October 24, 2025, after which participants are expected to demonstrate improved water skills and a stronger sense of safety awareness on the state’s waterways.
