Shippers’ Council To Expedite VTA Projects For Efficient Dry Ports

As part of efforts to guarantee efficient operations of the nation’s Inland Dry Ports (IDPs), the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), Barr. Akutah Pius, MON, plans to expedite actions for the completion of Vehicle Transit Areas (VTAs) across the IDPs.

This, according to the NSC boss, is in line with promoting seamless exportation of cargoes from the dry ports or hinterlands to the seaports, thereby enhancing the non-oil sector.

VTAs are public rest areas located off the highways, designed to provide temporary rest location for truck drivers and other service providers within a designated community .

The facilities in a VTA include; Gas Station, Motel, Restaurant, Mechanic Workshop, Fire Station, Police Post, Automated Cargo Tracking System, Banks, etc.

NSC Executive Secretary disclosed this in a chat with journalists, during an interactive session in Aba, Abia State, after a familiarization visit to the Isiala-Ngwa IDP project.

Akutah equally stated that the Federal Government had also given marching order for the port economic regulator to expedite action on the completion of dry port projects at designated locations across the country.

The Shippers Council boss assured the trading public that the Council is determined to promote made in Nigeria products, emphasizing the importance of Aba in exportation of leathers and other allied products that should be promoting exports.

He affirmed the Council’s readiness to support traders and shippers in Aba for their participation of the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and pledged renewed commitment to the development of the IDP project in partnership with Abia state government.
