Mr. Oluyinka Onigbinde has emerged as the new President of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) following a closely-fought election conducted during the association’s elective congress.

Onigbinde secured victory over veteran maritime journalist, Rev. John Iwori, polling 20 votes against Iwori’s 13 votes from a total of 33 accredited votes cast.

The election, which drew active participation from members of the maritime media body, also produced a new crop of executives expected to pilot the affairs of the association for the next tenure.

Obasi Sylvanus emerged unopposed as Vice President, while Fabian Anawo was elected General Secretary.

Other elected officers include Ojelabi Amina as Assistant General Secretary, Ayanfeoluwa Providence as Public Relations Officer (PRO), and Ruth Umuna as Treasurer.

Ambrose Okehi also emerged unopposed as Financial Secretary.

Speaking after the election, the MARAN President, Onigbinde, promised to lead the association with an all-inclusive approach, labelling the group as “one big family.

He announced that there are no more factions within the group and thanked the leadership of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos Council led by the Lagos NUJ Chairman, Mr. Leye Ajayi for supervising the elections.

The newly-elected executive council is expected to strengthen professionalism, promote members’ welfare, and foster unity within the association as it charts a new course for maritime journalism in Nigeria.
