Few days after directing minimum standards for boats operating in Lagos, the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) Lagos Area Office has intensified its inspection of watercrafts operating on Lagos waterways.
During the inspection by NIWA officials on all small boats operating along the Ikorodu/CMS routes today (Friday), the regulator stressed that all boats operating along this route are equired to undergo a meticulous two-stage examination.
News Diet gathered that the first phase involves jacket inspection, followed by a comprehensive assessment of boat worthiness in the second stage.
This development underscores NIWA’s commitment to enhancing safety measures on Lagos waterways as the Authority intensifies efforts to curb boat mishaps and consequent loss of lives from operational inefficiencies.
Recall that the NIWA Lagos Area Manager, Engr. Sarat Braimah, on Wednesday, instructed that henceforth boats must have speedometers, three lifebuoys and a diver.
Engr. Braimah, who was speaking during an engagement with boat operators and waterways stakeholders at the Authority’s Lagos, also warned against nighttime voyages for boats without night navigational aids.
