The Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez, will arrive in Nigeria on a three-day working visit from October 2nd to 4th, 2025, in what is being described as a major boost to the nation’s maritime profile and attributable to the nation’s anti-piracy success.

The announcement was made by the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola, during a courtesy call by the Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Michael Gregory Oamen, at the agency’s headquarters.

Mobereola praised the Navy–NIMASA alliance as a “model partnership” that has significantly reduced piracy and other maritime crimes, not only in Nigerian waters but across the Gulf of Guinea, earning global recognition.

He revealed that Dominguez will tour Nigerian Navy installations and NIMASA facilities in Lagos, a move that underscores the IMO’s acknowledgment of Nigeria’s progress in maritime security and international cooperation.

“The partnership between the Nigerian Navy and NIMASA is a template of success that other agencies and regional partners can emulate,” Mobereola said.

Rear Admiral Oamen, in turn, lauded NIMASA’s management for sustaining the synergy, stressing that the Navy’s collaboration with the agency is critical to maritime growth, stability, and global confidence in Nigeria’s waters.
