Nigerian Chamber of Shipping To Host Women-Centric Maritime Discourse

  • WISTA, WIMA, FESAN, others to spotlight women issues

As part of activities to commemorate the 2024 International Day for Women in Maritime, the Nigerian Chamber of Shipping (NCS) will be organizing a strategic summit where industry bigwigs, women amazons and operators will dissect gender and safety issues.

The event’s convener/ Director General of NCS, Mrs. Vivian Chimezie-Azubuike, disclosed this in a press statement disseminated on Wednesday, even as she noted that programme themed: “Safe Horizons: Women Shaping The Future Of Maritime Safety” will have both onsite and online participants.

The summit is scheduled to hold at Four Points by Sheraton in Victoria Island, Lagos by 10am on Thursday, May 23rd, 2024.

According to her, the event will have a rich representation of women in the maritime sector as seafarers, psychotherapists, administrators, marine engineers, human resource experts, as well as presidents of women groups share insights on numerous pertinent issues.

Guest speakers billed for the event include; President of WISTA International, Mrs. Elpiniki Petraki, and the Managing Director of NLNG Ship Management Limited, Mr Abdul-Kadir Ahmed. Meanwhile, the Executive Secretary, WISTA International, Mrs. Jemilat Mahamah will be the Special Guest, and the President of NCS, Mr. Aminu Umar will be the host.

A high-level panel of discussants scheduled for the summit comprise; the President of WISTA Nigeria, Dr. (Mrs.) Odunayo Ani; Vice President, WISTA Nigeria, Capt. Edidiong Sola-Abalo; Maritime Psychotherapist, Pam Kern; in a session to be moderated by the President of Female Seafarers Association of Nigeria (FESAN), Koni Duniya.

Another panel session will have the President of WIMA Nigeria, Mrs. Rollens Macfoy; Group Human Resources Manager, LTT Coastal Marine Services, Mrs. Theodora Nwaeze; and a Marine Engineer, Uchechi Okoronkwo; with the CEO, Media Traction, Ezinne Azunna as the Moderator.

The event is in commemoration of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) international day for women in maritime and its 3rd series seeks to elucidate the peculiarities of women in the shipping and maritime industry.

According to the Director General of NCS, Vivian, the year 2024 theme, as suggested by IMO, promises to be insightful and veterans are billed to explore the various angles at the summit.
