Lagos is set to temporarily close key waterways along the Five Cowries Creek as the state plays host to the E1 Championship, the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing series, scheduled for October 2nd to 5th, 2025.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) announced on Monday that both private and commercial jetties/terminals within the Five Cowries axis will face partial and total closures at different times to guarantee safety and smooth operations of the global sporting spectacle.

According to the notice, the restrictions will begin on Thursday, October 2, with a partial closure from Falomo Bridge to Oriental Hotel between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. On Friday, October 3, a total closure will be enforced from Oriental Hotel to Mekwen Bridge, also from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The restrictions will peak on Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5, with a full closure of the Falomo Bridge – Oriental Hotel stretch between 8am and 6pm daily.

LASWA explained that the measure is a “vital safety and security requirement” to safeguard lives, support seamless event logistics, and position Lagos as a credible destination for world-class international sports. Normal ferry services across the affected routes are expected to resume on Monday, October 6th.

The agency advised ferry operators, passengers, and other waterway users to seek alternative routes and plan journeys in advance, assuring the public that the inconvenience would be short-lived but worthwhile for Lagos’ global image.

The E1 Championship, which makes its debut in Lagos, is expected to attract global attention as elite racers showcase cutting-edge all-electric powerboats along the city’s iconic waterfront.
