The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has appointed Dr. Bashir Ambi-Mohammed, former Head of the Complaints Unit at the Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC), as its new Head of Communications and Advertising.

The appointment comes as IMION, established by the Nigerian Navy, intensifies efforts to build capacity, support policy development and strengthen advocacy across Nigeria’s evolving maritime and blue economy sectors.

Ambi-Mohammed brings 26 years of experience at the NSC, where he handled trade and shipping disputes and played a key role in resolving complaints between industry stakeholders.

During his tenure as Head of the Complaints Unit, he was involved in interventions that reportedly saved the Nigerian economy N4.8 billion through dispute resolution, alternative dispute resolution (ADR) and trade consumer protection mechanisms.

He also pioneered the NSC Complaints Newsletter and served as Chairman of its Editorial Board, contributing to efforts to improve information flow and transparency around port operations.

His career at the Shippers’ Council earned him several industry recognitions, including the NSC ACTU/ICPC Integrity Award, NSC CEO Award and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) International President’s Award.

An expert in multimodal transport and logistics, covering maritime, land and aviation, Ambi-Mohammed holds an M.Sc. in International Transport from Cardiff Business School, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Lead City University.

His academic and professional background spans transport administration, stakeholder engagement, corporate communications and media technology.

At IMION, he is expected to leverage this experience to strengthen the institute’s communications strategy, expand stakeholder engagement and promote its executive programmes and capacity-building initiatives.

The appointment also positions IMION to deepen its communication and advocacy efforts as Nigeria seeks to harness the economic potential of the maritime sector and broader blue economy.
