By Victoria Adonye Ibiama

The Federal Government has commended the Nigerian Navy for its efforts in securing the nation’s maritime assets, especially crude oil pipelines and oil wells as the nation’s crude oil production rose to 1.5million barrels per day in November 2023.

In a bid to encourage the Navy, the federal government also pledged to enhance the operational capacity of the Nigerian Navy by providing additional patrol vessels and cutting-edge surveillance equipment.

This commitment was given by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) George Akume during the Nigerian Navy 2023 ceremonial sunset and awards night in Abuja observed by News Diet.

According to the SGF, this underscores a strategic move to bolster maritime security and address operational challenges faced by the Navy.

Akume highlighted the critical importance of these measures in ensuring comprehensive coverage of Nigeria’s expansive maritime domain, adding that the government’s commitment is part of a broader initiative aimed at overcoming challenges such as platform deficiencies and logistical constraints that have been identified within the Nigerian Navy.

Meanwhile, the SGF acknowledged the commendable achievements of the Nigerian Navy, notably its successful efforts leading to Nigeria’s removal from the International Maritime Bureau (IMB) piracy list, stressing that it signifies a significant boost in maritime security which has translated into tangible economic benefits, with increased government revenue.

One notable outcome of the Navy’s effective measures is the remarkable surge in Nigeria’s daily crude oil production, reaching approximately 1.5 million barrels per day as of November 2023. This underscores the pivotal role played by the Navy in contributing to Nigeria’s economic landscape.

Akume stressed the importance of viewing support and funding for the Nigerian Navy as a strategic investment. He emphasized that such investments are essential for guaranteeing economic prosperity, national development, and the overall well-being of the nation’s citizens.

Reassuring the public, Akume confirmed the Federal Government’s dedication, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to comprehensively address operational challenges. This commitment extends beyond the provision of patrol vessels and surveillance equipment to resolving logistical issues, ensuring the Nigerian Navy’s continued professional excellence.

The Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian Navy’s capabilities reflects a strategic approach to maritime security, economic growth, and national development. These initiatives underscore a concerted effort to fortify the Navy’s operational capacity, contributing to a safer and more prosperous Nigeria.
