A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State and real estate developer, Chief Barrister Success Obioma Akagburuonye, has called on politicians and business leaders to respect agreements and uphold the sanctity of human life, as he disclosed that he recently survived an alleged assassination attempt.
Akagburuonye made the remarks at his country home in Ogbor-Uvuru, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, while hosting members of the Owerri Senatorial Zone Council of Elders, who were in the area for consultations on selecting a consensus governorship candidate from the zone ahead of the 2027 elections, in line with Governor Hope Uzodimma’s succession plan.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the APC stalwart – who is positioning himself as one of the party’s governorship hopefuls – said security agencies foiled coordinated plots to assassinate him along the Owerri Airport Road and at his ancestral home.
According to him, actionable intelligence led to the arrest of some suspects allegedly involved in the plot. He declined to disclose details of their detention, citing ongoing investigations by security agencies.
Akagburuonye further alleged that preliminary security reports pointed to the involvement of a former governor of Imo State as the sponsor of the arrested suspects – an allegation he said stemmed from a protracted land dispute in Abuja.
He explained that his only interaction with the former governor occurred in 2018 through the latter’s elder sister over a proposed land transaction that was eventually aborted.
However, he claimed that the former governor has since employed “various illegal means” to dispossess him of his Abuja properties, a matter currently before the Court of Appeal in Abuja.
“I believe the attempt on my life is connected to these land disputes over my legitimately acquired properties,” Akagburuonye said.
The APC stalwart, who also convenes the Hope Rising for Imolites movement, urged political actors to eschew violence and intimidation, stressing that ambition should never be pursued at the expense of human life.
