
The Alumni of Maritime Academy of Nigeria Oron (AMANO) has been granted an observer status at the Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control for West and Central African Region (Abuja MoU).
With the observer status, AMANO will be able to participate and contribute to the efforts of the Abuja MOU in eradicating substandard ships within the region covering West and Central African states.
AMANO revealed this in a press statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oamien Ailemen, on Saturday.
Part of the statement read: “We are delighted to share that our dear alumni was granted observer status by the council of Ministers following a recommendation by the Port State committee meeting held between 10th and 13th September 2024 in Congo Brazzaville.
“The approval came following an application put forward by AMANO before the committee which was deliberated and approved.
“With its mission to contribute towards excellence in the maritime sector through capacity development within the maritime sector, this status will bring AMANO into the mainstream of developing and promoting capacity and aligning programs towards common goals.”
Meanwhile, other organizations approved as observers at the Abuja MOU include; the Regional Maritime University, Ghana and the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron.
The President of the AMANO Mr Emmanuel Maiguwa who was in attendance expressed satisfaction with the new development even as he commended the progress and programmes embarked by the MOU especially under the leadership of Capt. Sunday Umoren.
Maiguwa observed that Capt. Umoren has guided the Abuja MOU in developing the capacity of member states and developing ethics of Port State inspectors.
He equally assured that AMANO will work assiduously to support the mission and programmes of the organization.
