Themed “The Role of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in Advancing a Sustainable Marine and Blue Economy in Africa,” the virtual event will convene policymakers, industry leaders, academics, and development partners to discuss strategies for integrating ESG frameworks into ocean governance and sustainable business models.

Speaking ahead of the event, the President of AFMESI, Dr. (Mrs.) Felicia Mogo, stated that a major highlight of the symposium will be the official presentation of AFMESI’s IOC-UNESCO-endorsed Decade Action Project, “Sustainable Ocean Resilience for African Communities (SORAC)”

According to her, the project is a landmark initiative aimed at strengthening coastal resilience, fostering innovation, and promoting ocean-based sustainable development across the continent.

Dr. Mogo equally noted that AFMESI will unveil its flagship publication, Blue Horizon magazine, which will serve as a knowledge platform for advancing dialogue and research on marine sustainability, policy innovation, and blue economy opportunities in Africa.

Her words: “The 5th annual AFMESI symposium underscores the organisation’s commitment to advancing Africa’s role in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030) through collaboration, capacity-building, and evidence-based policymaking.

“With ESG at the core of global investment and development decisions, Africa’s blue economy must align sustainability with social impact and economic growth.”

The AFMESI President, who is credited for pioneering sustainable Blue Economy agenda in Nigeria, stated that participation in the symposium is open to the public, with registration available via afmesi.org/sign-up-for-afmesi-2025-symposium.
