In a groundbreaking effort to combat cervical cancer and promote women’s health, Phlox Health WASH Foundation and WASH 94.9 FM, Lagos, in partnership with Pathfinder Foundation, the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Lagos State Chapter, and the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board, will host a free HPV vaccination and cervical cancer screening program.

In a statement released by the Program Officer, Phlox Health WASH Foundation, Jennifer Nwosu, the event is scheduled to take place from February 13 to 15, 2025, at the Phlox Health WASH Foundation/WASH FM premises, Plot 770 Somide Oduijirin Avenue Omole Phase 2 Lagos, will provide free HPV vaccinations for girls aged 9 to 14 and free cervical cancer screening for women, ensuring early detection and prevention of the disease.

Cervical cancer remains a major health concern in Nigeria, yet it is largely preventable through early vaccination and regular screening. This initiative is designed to safeguard the health of young girls by ensuring they receive the HPV vaccine, which protects against the virus responsible for most cervical cancer cases. For women, screening will serve as a critical step in early detection, potentially saving lives through timely medical intervention.

The program will also feature expert-led health talks on cervical cancer prevention, treatment options, and overall reproductive health.

The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Health, a leading advocate for women’s healthcare and a founding member/trustee of the Women in Healthcare Network (WIHCN). Other notable medical professionals, public health experts, and policymakers will be present to lend their voices to this vital cause.

In addition to the medical services provided, the event will include the distribution of free feminine hygiene products to promote safe and healthy practices among girls and women.

The organizers call on parents, guardians, and women across Lagos to take advantage of this opportunity. The program will run daily from 10am to 4pm, and participation is completely free.

This initiative underscores the urgent need for proactive healthcare measures and aligns with global efforts to eliminate cervical cancer as a public health threat. By coming together, we can protect the future of Nigerian women and ensure a healthier, cancer-free generation.
