The National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) has congratulated leading Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, on the outstanding box office performance of her latest film, Behind The Scene (BTS), which has grossed over N2.4 billion nationwide and is still enjoying strong cinema exhibition across the country.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director/CEO of the Board, Dr Shaibu Husseini, the NFVCB described the feat as another landmark in the growth of the Nigerian film industry, noting that the achievement further cements Akindele’s status as one of the most influential and commercially successful figures in Nollywood.
Dr Husseini highlighted that Akindele has now delivered record-breaking cinema performances for four consecutive years, describing the consistency as a reflection of creative excellence, strategic storytelling, and deep audience engagement.
“This level of sustained success reflects not just talent, but a strong grasp of the evolving dynamics of film production, distribution and exhibition in Nigeria,” he said.
The Board disclosed that it will formally honour Akindele with a Box Office Queen Award for the years 2023, 2024 and 2025. According to the NFVCB, plans are underway to present the awards at a mutually agreed date, with the Honourable Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Barrister Hannatu Musa Musawa, expected to lead the presentation alongside other top female executives in the creative sector.
Dr Husseini explained that the presentation was earlier scheduled to hold during the PAO Digital Conference but was postponed at the request of the filmmaker due to her tight schedule.
In a related development, the NFVCB also commended actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham, on the remarkable box office success of her directorial debut, Oversabi Auntie, which has crossed the N1 billion mark in cinema earnings nationwide.
The Board described the achievement as historic, noting that the film now ranks among the four highest-grossing Nollywood films of all time and marks a highly successful entry for Abraham into film directing.
According to the NFVCB, the performance of Oversabi Auntie highlights Abraham’s versatility and growing creative influence, while underscoring the expanding opportunities for Nigerian filmmakers redefining storytelling and audience connection.
“We congratulate both filmmakers on these impressive milestones. Their achievements are strong indicators of Nollywood’s continued growth, resilience and global promise,” Dr Husseini said.
