Guard Time Information (GTI), a Human Rights Activists nationwide group, has condemned the reported threat to the life of Peter Obi, describing it as a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy and national peace.
In a press statement issued in Abuja, the group called on the newly appointed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to immediately deploy intelligence units to investigate the alleged threat in Edo State and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted.
GTI said any threat against a political leader undermines democratic values, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of citizens. It stressed that Nigeria’s democracy must not be reduced to a climate of intimidation, harassment, or violence.
The organization urged political parties and their supporters to embrace healthy competition, issue-based campaigns, and respect for opposing views, warning that political rivalry should never translate into threats to life or actions capable of destabilizing the country.
GTI further emphasized that anyone found culpable, regardless of political affiliation or social status, must face the full weight of the law to deter future occurrences.
Chairman of GTI Human Rights Activists Nationwide, Mr. Bibi Oduku, who spoke alongside legal practitioners and other rights advocates in Abuja, called on security agencies to act swiftly and professionally to reassure Nigerians that their safety and democratic rights remain protected.
He added that safeguarding national unity and peaceful political engagement is a collective responsibility.
