The Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics of Nigeria (APFFLON) has congratulated the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, on the extension of his tenure by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while urging him to prioritise improved welfare and comprehensive healthcare for serving and retired customs officers.

In a statement signed by its National President, Frank Ogunojemite, APFFLON described the tenure extension as a well-deserved recognition of Adeniyi’s transformative leadership and contributions to the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

The association said the Customs boss has recorded significant milestones in revenue generation, trade facilitation, stakeholder engagement, anti-smuggling operations and the modernisation of customs procedures, which have collectively strengthened Nigeria’s economy.

APFFLON also commended the Federal Government for retaining Adeniyi, noting that the extension would enable him to consolidate on the reforms and achievements already recorded under his administration.

However, the association urged the Comptroller-General to use the opportunity to establish a lasting legacy centred on the welfare of customs personnel.

According to APFFLON, the introduction of comprehensive and lifelong medical care programmes for customs officers is imperative, given the occupational risks and sacrifices associated with their duties.

The association argued that a sustainable healthcare system covering officers and their families during active service and after retirement would significantly enhance morale, productivity and dedication to national service.

It further called for stronger insurance schemes and improved welfare packages, stressing that adequate health and life insurance coverage would provide much-needed security for officers who risk their lives daily in safeguarding Nigeria’s borders and protecting the nation’s economic interests.

“The extension of the CGC’s tenure presents a unique opportunity to leave a lasting legacy not only in institutional reforms and revenue generation but also in the welfare, healthcare and overall well-being of the men and women of the Nigeria Customs Service,” the association stated.

APFFLON reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Nigeria Customs Service and initiatives geared towards trade facilitation, economic development and improved welfare for officers and stakeholders across the maritime and logistics sector.

The group also wished Adeniyi continued wisdom, strength and success as he leads the Service through the next phase of its transformation agenda.
