The International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening port operations and expanding investment in Nigeria’s maritime industry in alignment with the Federal Government’s blue economy vision.

A high-powered delegation from ICTSI, led by its Nigeria Chairman, Hon. Farouk Adamu Aliyu, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola (CON), at his office in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting was part of ICTSI’s ongoing engagement with government to enhance port performance and drive sustainable growth across the maritime value chain.

Discussions during the visit focused on the operational progress of the Onne Multipurpose Terminal (OMT) and strategies for its next phase of expansion and efficiency improvement in line with the Ministry’s agenda for a globally competitive port system.

Minister Oyetola commended ICTSI for its sustained investments and contributions to Nigeria’s maritime development, assuring that the government would continue to foster a business environment that encourages innovation and private sector participation.

His words: “Our goal is to make Nigeria’s ports globally competitive by ensuring efficiency, transparency, and sustainability.

“We will continue to work with credible investors like ICTSI to unlock the full potential of the blue economy and position Nigeria as Africa’s leading maritime hub.”

Since commencing operations in 2021, ICTSI’s Onne Multipurpose Terminal has played a pivotal role in boosting cargo throughput and reducing vessel turnaround time at the Onne Port Complex in Rivers State.

The terminal, built to handle containers, break bulk, project and heavy-lift, as well as roll-on/roll-off cargo, features a 1,000-metre heavy-lift quay, 45 hectares of yard area, modern warehousing, and four Gottwald mobile harbour cranes, among other state-of-the-art equipment.

In June 2025, OMT made history by receiving Kota Oasis, a Singaporean-flagged, LNG-powered container ship — the first of its kind to berth in West Africa. Operated by Pacific International Lines (PIL), the vessel’s arrival highlighted OMT’s commitment to green port operations and sustainable shipping.

Beyond its operational achievements, OMT continues to support its host communities through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives such as a Safe Water Scheme, youth empowerment, and vocational training programmes.

With its focus on technology-driven efficiency, environmental sustainability, and community engagement, ICTSI’s Onne Multipurpose Terminal remains a vital gateway for trade and logistics in West Africa and a key partner in advancing Nigeria’s blue economy aspirations.
