The Lagos State Government has taken another significant step towards overhauling water transportation with the commencement of the Project Management, Operations and Design (PMOD) Consultancy for the Omi Eko Project.
Speaking at the Consultancy’s kick-off meeting in Lagos on Wednesday, the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, described the exercise as a major milestone in delivering a safer, faster and more sustainable water transport network across the state.
Osiyemi said the PMOD consultancy would provide the technical expertise, project coordination and operational planning required to drive the successful implementation of the ambitious initiative.
He noted that the Omi Eko Project ranks among Africa’s most ambitious inland waterways transport programmes, combining modern terminals, electric ferry technology and improved operational systems to ease commuting, shorten travel time, enhance passenger safety and support environmental sustainability.
The Commissioner stressed that the consultants would play a broader role beyond project management by coordinating key stakeholders and ensuring seamless project execution.
He added that strong collaboration among the Lagos State Government, development partners, contractors, consultants and host communities would be critical to the project’s success.
Osiyemi also thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to transforming urban mobility, while appreciating the continued support of the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union (EU) in advancing the initiative.
Speaking for the PMOD consultancy team, Head of Delegation and Director of the International Unit at Planet SA, Dimitris Galanis, pledged to deliver the assignment in line with global best practices.
He assured that the consultancy would deploy world-class project management, operational planning and technical expertise to support the successful rollout of the Omi Eko Project, adding that the team would work closely with all stakeholders to develop a safe, efficient and environmentally friendly water transport system for millions of Lagos residents.
The Omi Eko Project is a flagship Lagos State initiative aimed at modernising water transportation through upgraded infrastructure, electric ferry services and efficient operational systems to boost connectivity, economic growth and sustainable urban mobility.
