The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reinforced its commitment to digital innovation, sustainable development, and youth empowerment by entering into a strategic partnership with the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation (AALF) to develop the next generation of leaders for Lagos’ emerging blue economy.
The partnership was formalized during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation to the LASWA headquarters, where both organisations identified key areas of collaboration focused on leadership development, community engagement, environmental sustainability, and capacity building.
Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, stressed that digital innovation, strategic partnerships, and community participation are critical to unlocking the full potential of the blue economy.
“The growth of the blue economy requires visionary leadership, digital innovation, community participation, and strategic partnerships.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation in promoting leadership excellence, capacity development, and initiatives that will positively impact waterfront communities and stakeholders within the waterways sector,” he said.
He noted that investing in young people through leadership and skills development would strengthen human capital, accelerate innovation, and support Lagos State’s vision of building a resilient and sustainable waterways ecosystem.
Under the partnership, LASWA and AALF will jointly implement leadership training programmes, youth empowerment initiatives, community outreach projects, environmental sustainability campaigns, and knowledge-sharing engagements designed to equip young Nigerians with the skills and mindset needed to contribute meaningfully to the state’s growing blue economy.
Director of Apollo Africa Leadership Foundation, Ayo Akindele, described leadership as one of Africa’s greatest assets, noting that sustainable development depends on deliberate investments in young people.
“Leadership is one of Africa’s most valuable resources, and building future leaders requires collaboration across both public and private sectors. Our partnership with LASWA presents an opportunity to empower young people with the skills, exposure, and mindset needed to drive sustainable development and contribute meaningfully to the growth of the state, country, and continent,” Akindele said.
The collaboration aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader vision of leveraging the blue economy to stimulate economic growth, create jobs, strengthen environmental stewardship, and improve the quality of life for residents.
Both organisations reaffirmed their commitment to delivering impactful programmes that will nurture future leaders, promote safety, encourage innovation, and advance sustainable development across Lagos’ waterfront communities.
