Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) have begun talks on a strategic partnership aimed at enhancing safety standards, improving accident investigation processes, and boosting operational efficiency across Lagos waterways.

The collaboration was initiated during a courtesy visit by an NSIB delegation to LASWA’s headquarters in Lagos, where both agencies discussed measures to strengthen safety oversight, improve information sharing, and develop effective frameworks for accident prevention and emergency response.

Speaking during the meeting, the General Manager of LASWA and Special Adviser to the Governor of Lagos State on Blue Economy, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, stressed the importance of inter-agency collaboration in advancing safe, efficient, and sustainable water transportation in the state.

He noted that waterways have become an increasingly important component of Lagos’ transportation system, making it necessary for relevant stakeholders to work together to promote operational excellence and boost public confidence in water transport.

Leading the NSIB delegation, the Bureau’s Director General, Captain Alex Badeh, said the partnership would strengthen efforts to identify safety risks, prevent accidents, and foster a stronger safety culture within the waterways sector.

Badeh said NSIB remains committed to its mandate of promoting transportation safety through independent investigations and actionable safety recommendations.

Discussions between both agencies centred on key areas of cooperation, including safety data exchange, joint awareness campaigns, training programmes, incident reporting systems, emergency response coordination, and technical support for accident investigations and safety management systems.

The two organisations expressed their commitment to building a sustainable working relationship that will improve safety outcomes for operators, passengers, and other waterways users, while supporting the continued expansion of water transportation in Lagos.

The meeting ended with an agreement to sustain engagements and develop practical initiatives that will further enhance safety and operational standards across Lagos waterways.
