The Acting Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Dr. Kevin Okonna, has charged graduating cadets to uphold the Academy’s core values of discipline, integrity, and professionalism as they step into the global maritime industry.
Speaking during the Academy’s 2025 Passing Out Parade held on Monday, Dr. Okonna, who also served as the Parade Review Officer, said the values instilled in the cadets through years of rigorous academic and regimental training would serve as their compass in navigating challenges ahead.
His words: “You must carry forward the values that have shaped you here – discipline, integrity, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
“Your time at the Academy has prepared you to face the challenges and opportunities of a dynamic maritime industry.”
The Acting Rector commended the graduating cadets for their resilience, focus, and commitment to excellence, describing their success as a product of determination and hard work.
He also applauded members of the Academy’s Management, staff, and the Nigerian Navy for their steadfast contribution to maintaining the institution’s high standards of discipline and professionalism.
Reaffirming the Academy’s mission, Dr. Okonna said MAN remains dedicated to producing competent, confident, and globally competitive seafarers who will contribute meaningfully to national and international maritime development.
Highlighting the uniqueness of the 2025 graduating class, he described them as “the most fortunate cadets,” noting that they had the rare privilege of meeting the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), H.E. Arsenio Dominguez, during his recent visit to Nigeria. He added that the attendance of IMO consultants at their parade further underscored the Academy’s growing international reputation.
The Passing Out Parade featured a colourful display of military precision, including quick and slow march-pasts, inspection of guards, and presentation of awards to outstanding cadets for academic and leadership excellence.
The event drew a large audience of top management officials, staff, dignitaries, families, and friends, who gathered to celebrate the milestone. Dr. Okonna described the day as “a defining moment not only for the cadets but for the Academy’s vision of shaping the next generation of maritime professionals.”
