Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), is set to unveil the highly anticipated Omi Eko Project, a groundbreaking initiative designed to revolutionize water transportation in Africa’s largest megacity.

The official launch will take place on Friday, October 17, 2025, at the Five Cowries Terminal, Falomo, beginning at 10:00 AM.

Described as a flagship component of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s smart city and multimodal transport vision, the Omi Eko Project aims to transform Lagos’s waterways into a fast, safe, and sustainable transport corridor.

The event will feature distinguished guests from government, the private sector, development partners, and the media, with the highlight being the ceremonial unveiling by the Governor himself.

According to LASWA, the Omi Eko Project represents a new era in Lagos’s transportation infrastructure, one anchored on innovation, sustainability, and accessibility.

The initiative will deploy over 78 high-capacity electric ferries, introduce digital ticketing systems, and upgrade intelligent ferry terminals equipped with real-time passenger information systems and enhanced safety technology.

When fully operational, the project is expected to drastically cut commute times across the state’s waterways, decongest major road networks, and improve connectivity between Lagos Island, the Mainland, and coastal communities.

Beyond transport efficiency, it also underscores the state’s growing commitment to environmental stewardship through the promotion of clean energy and reduction of carbon emissions.

The Five Cowries Terminal – an architectural landmark and central intermodal hub – has been strategically chosen to host the launch. Its location symbolizes the integration of land and water transport, a core element of the Lagos Urban Mobility Plan, which envisions a future where ferries, buses, and rail systems work seamlessly together.
