Tragedy struck in the early hours of Saturday, August 23, 2025, when a Toyota Camry saloon car veered off the 3rd Mainland Bridge, inward Iyana-Iworo, and plunged into the Lagos Lagoon.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) confirmed that its Search and Rescue (SAR) team, supported by the Marine Police, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), responded swiftly to the distress call.
Initial recovery efforts revealed a female victim, identified as Aisha, aged between 25 and 35. Her body was promptly retrieved from the water with the help of local divers and fishermen and handed over to her family.
Subsequent investigations, however, confirmed that the vehicle carried a second passenger. He was later identified as 31-year-old Chado Daniel Danladi, of 7 Oremeta Street, Off Opebi Link Bridge, Ikeja.
Danladi, described as a colleague of the first victim, was recovered hours later during an extended search and also handed over to his family.
Authorities commended the coordinated emergency response and the critical role played by local fishermen in aiding the rescue operation.
Disclosing this in a statement, LASWA’s Public Affairs Unit emphasized that the incident highlights the effectiveness of joint emergency response systems in Lagos.
The regulator assured residents of the state’s commitment to waterway safety and rapid rescue interventions.
