Dockworkers’ Day: WISTA Celebrates Nigerian Dockworkers, Canvasses Safe Workplace

Women’s International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) Nigeria has celebrated the nation’s dockworkers and called for safe work environment in commemorating the 2024 International Day of Dockworkers.

The President of WISTA Nigeria, Dr. (Mrs.) Odunayo Ani, gave this congratulatory remark during the industry celebration which held in Surulere, Lagos to mark the global event on Wednesday.

According to her, the 2024 Day of the Dockworkers theme: “Safety First, Efficiency Always” underscores the importance of maintaining a safe work environment that enables dockworkers optimally carryout their work.

Dr. Ani commended Nigerian dockworkers commitment to both safety and productivity which ensures smooth operations and a secure work environment for all.

Her words: “Thank you for your tireless efforts and the crucial role you play in keeping the world moving forward. This  2024 Day of the Dockworkers, we take a moment to honor the incredible work you do and the vital role you play in our global economy. As the backbone of the logistics and shipping industries, your expertise and tireless effort ensure that goods reach their destinations safely and on time.

“This year’s theme—Safety First, Efficiency Always—reminds us of the delicate balance you maintain every day. Your unwavering commitment to safety, through careful planning, teamwork, and attention to detail, ensures that each day at the dock is as secure as it is productive. But it’s not just about safety; it’s about working smart and fast, maximizing productivity without ever compromising on quality or well-being.”

She added that dockworkers are the unsung heroes who make global trade possible, keeping everything from essential goods to critical supplies flowing around the world.

“We celebrate the expertise, resilience, and strength that you bring to the workplace every day. Thank you for your dedication to creating a safer and more efficient work environment for your colleagues and the world at large. Your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed—today, we recognize you, and we stand in gratitude for the essential work you do. Happy 2024 Day of the Dockworkers!” the WISTA Nigeria President said.

She posited that the activities of dockworkers ensure seamless distribution of food, pharmaceuticals and other essential goods, emergency response and relief materials, national security, among other benefits.

Meanwhile, she encouraged dockworkers to actively participate in marine environmental protection through sustainability initiatives, such as reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco- friendly practices, even as she opined that dockworkers could also engage in local community development projects that improve the quality of life for residents around ports.
