
The President of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration (CIOTA) Nigeria, Prince Segun Ochuko Obayendo, has called for a significant transformation within the country’s transport sector, even as he stressed the importance of professionalism, at the South West Zonal Conference of the institute, in Lagos, on Tuesday.
Addressing the attendees, Prince Obayendo emphasized the importance of the transport sector as a measure of professionalism and urged members to protect it with courage and dedication.
His words: “The lack of professionalism in the sector stems from a lack of ownership.”
While commending the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) for their recent launch of the ticket alert system, the CIOTA President added that, “this is a step in the right direction in regulating and enforcing best practices in the transport sector.”
The conference, themed: “The Role of Transport and Logistics in Sustainable Development,” featured Professor Emmanuel Oni as the keynote speaker and he underscored the critical role of Transport Planning in reducing environmental impacts.
Prof. Oni described Transport and Logistics as the life and blood of modern economies while positing that the crucial role of transport and logistics in environmental preservation must be recognized.
“Transport and Logistics sectors significantly impact both economic and environmental sustainability, thereby enhancing mobility and accessibility,” he said.
There were goodwill messages from notable figures, including; the first female president of CIoTA, and President of Shippers Association of Lagos State (SALS), Princess Mulikat Sanni; Hon. Commissioner of Osun State, Hon. Ephriam Oyedele; General Manager of the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI), Mrs. Afusat Abike Tiamiyu; Dean of the School of Transport at Lagos State University, Prof. Charles Asieneme; and the Director General of the Nigerian Chambers of Shipping (NCS), Mrs. Vivian Chimezie-Azubuike.
The conference provided a platform for insightful discussions on the future of transport and logistics in Nigeria, emphasizing the need for professional management and sustainable practices to ensure the sector’s growth and environmental impact.
Some of the recommendations and submissions at the event are expected to influence policy changes and alter the practice in the transport sector, with implications for the broader public and industry.
