
Chukwu Michael, a 25-year old indigene of Abia State and student of Merchant Navy Maritime Academy, Sagamu, Ogun state has emerged the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student in Nigeria for the 2022 set.
Michael was declared winner of the Overall Best Graduate Maritime Student in Nigeria for the 2022 set at the just concluded 8th Annual Maritime Students And Youths Conference held in Lagos on Monday.
The Abia indigene made Distinction in Shipping Management with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.93, beating other students from other maritime academies, institutions and universities offering maritime related studies in Nigeria to clinch the number one spot.

At the 2024 AMSAY conference, Michael won two awards: Mrs. Dabney Shall-Holma Award of Academic Excellence for the Best Graduated Shipping Management Student in Nigeria with a Cash Prize of N100,000; and the Capt Sunday Umoren Award of Academic Excellence for the Overall Best Graduated Maritime Student in Nigeria with another Cash Prize of N100,000, making a total of N200,000.
Meanwhile, a student of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Adebisi Damilola Eunice, emerged the Best Graduate Female Maritime Student in Nigeria for 2022 set with Cumulative Grade Point Average CGPA of 3.89 classified as Distinction.
Damilola also won two awards at the occasion, namely: Mrs. Eunice Ezeoke’s Award of Academic Excellence for Best Graduated Maritime Transportation and Business Mgt with a cash prize of N50,000; and the WISTA Nigeria’s Award of Academic Excellence for Best Graduated Female Maritime Student in Nigeria with a cash prize of N100,000, making a total of N150,000.
Winners in other categories and fields of maritime studies are: Olaniyan Ayomide Matthew, a student of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology, Victoria Island Lagos who also made Distinction with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.62 and won Dr Chuks Onuoha’s Award of Academic Excellence for Fisheries Technology.
Amuda Kolawole, a law student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife Osun state made Distinction in Maritime Law by making aggregated score of 72.5 to win Barr Osuala Emma Nwagbara’s Award of Academic Excellence for Maritime Law.
Evergreen Ikhenugie, a student of Global Maritime Academy, Ughelli, Delta state made Distinction with CGPA of 3.54 and thus won Chief Carolyn Akum Ufere and Barr Praise Asuquo’ Award of Academic Excellence for Best Graduated Maritime Security Mgt Student with a total Cash Prize of N100,000.
Other winners include: Adeagbo Michael Tobiloba, a student of Merchant Navy Maritime Academy, Sagamu Ogun state who made Distinction with CGPA of 3.89 in Nautical Science and won Capt Segun Enitan’s Award of Academic Excellence in Nautical Science with a cash prize of N50,000.
Rotimi Ebenezer Ayodele, a student of Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology who also made Distinction with CGPA of 3.74 in Marine Engineering and thus won Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors Award of Academic Excellence for Marine Engineering with a Cash Prize of N50,000.
And Uzoba Chinonso Shedrack, a student of Federal University of Technology, Owerri Imo state who made Second Class Upper with CGPA of 4.22 in Transport Management Technology and won Alhaji Aminu Umar’s Award of Academic Excellence for Transport Mgt Technology with a Cash Prize of N100,000
Speaking while announcing the Award Winners at the occasion, the Convener of the AMSAY Conference and CEO of Platforms Communications, Mr Sylvanus Obasi said the Best Graduated Maritime Students Awards (BEGMASA) was instituted to stimulate healthy academic competition amongst Nigerian maritime schools and students.
He expressed gratitude to those who have offered to sponsor Cash Prizes for the award winners and also called on other good spirited individuals and maritime companies to offer automatic employments and scholarships to the BEGMASA winners as a way of encouragement and motivation for them to do better.
Obasi further revealed that his media company, Platforms Communications has details of Best Graduated Maritime Students in Nigeria from 2016 till date. Adding that whoever wants to employ the best in any field of maritime studies should reach out to him for recommendations.
